Northern Vietnam, Lao Cai Prov., Van Ban Distr., to the west of Nam Xay village (1 km to the W of point 21°59′00′'N, 104°02′00′'E). Primary broad-leaved wet evergreen montane forest with Fokienia hodginsii (as emergent) on granite and quartzite very steep slopes at elev. 1600 m a.s.l. Deciduous tree 20-25 m hg and 0.6 m in diam. Flowers: petals white, sepals dull reddish, disc bright yellow, anthers orange-pink. Young leaves light green with pink tint. Common. Usual co-dominant of second forest stratum.
