Remnants of primary evergreen broad-leaved and coniferous (with Calocedrus rupestris and Xanthocyparis vietnamensis) humid forest. Terrestrial and lithophytic rhizomatous herb in shady place among rocks. Leaves dark green above, light pale green below, petioles dull dirty purple. Flowers white with light pink tint. Locally very common. 11 October 2019, L. Averyanov, Nguyen Sinh Khang, T. Maisak, VR 1549 (holotype – LE01067022, isotype – HN, LE01070149 – photo). From similar species B. howii Merr. & Chun, B. psilophylla Irmsch. and B. subhowii S.H.Huang new species differs in rather rigid, narrowly half elliptic leaves (vs. leaves soft, herbaceous, oblique ovate to broadly ovate) and subequal wings on capsule (vs. abaxial wing much longer thal lateral wings), staminate subsimilar in all mentioned species, pistillate flowers unknown.

Remnants of primary evergreen broad-leaved and coniferous (with Calocedrus rupestris and Xanthocyparis vietnamensis) humid forest. Terrestrial rhizomatous herb in shady place among rocks. Leaves rigid, velvety dark green with unclear yellowish spots, pale green below. Flowers almost entirely black, stigma at apex yellow, below black. Not common. 11 October 2019, L. Averyanov, Nguyen Sinh Khang, T. Maisak, VR 1548 (holotype – LE01067134, isotype – HN, LE01070150 – photo). From most close Aspidistra clausa var. latifolia and A. zhangii new species differs in velvety leaves, almost black perianth lobes, 1–3 filaments fused with stile and strongly oblique pistil with light yellowish transversely elliptic or circular unlobed stigma.

From close S. dongnathamensis Suddee, Phutthai & Rueangr. and S. primuloides C.Y.Wu this plant differs in short distinct stem with leaves composed into apical rosette (vs. acaulescent plants with basal rosette), ovate leaves (vs. leaves cordate or circular) and dense long villous indumentum on petioles (vs. petioles sparsely villous), axillary inflorescence (vs. inflorescence subterminal) and densely villous scape pedicels and ovary (vs. scape, pedicels and ovary glabrous).
